From Sounding Out to Reading

As children develop their decoding skills, they practise reading words independently.

We use carefully selected words and activities that allow children to apply what they have been taught.

They learn to:

• Decode

• Blend

• Read

• Reread

• Self-correct

• Build accuracy

And with practice, words that once required careful sounding out begin to become easier and more automatic.

Words Don't Live on Their Own

Once children can read words, we help them apply those skills to sentences.

They begin to:

• Read connected text

• Track meaning

• Use punctuation

• Reread

• Self-correct

• Develop fluency

The goal isn't simply to say every word correctly.

The goal is to read and understand what the words are saying.

And this is where reading becomes meaningful.

Children begin applying their developing reading skills to books and stories.

• They aren't just decoding words.

• They're discovering characters.

• They're learning new vocabulary.

• They're making connections.

• They're answering questions.

• They're predicting.

They're talking about what they've read.

Because reading isn't just about saying the words.

It's about understanding the story.
